3. Measure actual light output, color temperature, and CRI
Color temperature and brightness change a lot between chip batches, even at the same rating. I ran a side-by-side comparison in 2022 on two mini spotlights, both labeled 3000K and 90 CRI. The cheaper unit measured about 3400K and the CRI was closer to 78. On a warm wood wall, the difference was obvious. The $1.20 per-unit savings became a $600 re-install because the client rejected the whole display wall.
If you have a meter, check actual watts, correlated color temperature, and CRI before you install a large quantity. If you don't have a meter, at least compare two units from the same batch side by side under a known light source. Differences in color and output between supposedly identical units are a red flag. It suggests the manufacturer is not controlling binning, and you'll see it on the job site.
This is also where 'equivalent wattage' creates the most confusion. A package might say 60W replacement, but actual input power might be 9W. For task lighting, that's okay. For grow lights, it's misleading. When someone asks me what watt grow light for Monstera, I tell them to look for actual watts drawn, not the 'replaces 150W' number. A plant doesn't care about the old incandescent wattage equivalent; it cares about the light energy reaching the leaves.

Clean wiring can hide a mechanical problem. With chandelier repair, check the canopy, mounting strap, chain links, and socket insulators. A chandelier is both an electrical fixture and a mechanical load. In my first year, I approved a chandelier repair because I got fixated on the wire connections and missed a cracked canopy bracket. Grow lights get a lot of marketing hype, but the checklist underneath is similar: actual watts, distance, and runtime. When someone asks me what watt grow light for Monstera, I ask for the pot size and how many hours a day the light will run. For a standard Monstera deliciosa in a 6-10 inch pot, I'd start with an LED that draws 30-50 actual watts from the wall, placed 12-18 inches above the top leaves. If the light is closer, lower the runtime or dial down the intensity. If it's farther, you'll need more watts or more hours.
Look for 'input power' or 'power consumption' on the label (this is the part people skip). If the box only shows 'equivalent wattage', treat the number as marketing. The difference matters: a 15W grow light labeled '100W equivalent' won't give a Monstera the same energy as a 40W fixture labeled '150W equivalent.'
I'm not 100% sure about every plant species, so take this as a starting point, not a guarantee. Watch the leaves. If new leaves come in small and far apart, the light is probably too weak or too far. If leaves show brown edges or bleaching, it's too close or too strong. Two weeks of observation tells you more than a spec sheet.
