In March 2024, at 10:34 on a Thursday night, I got a text from a production manager I'd worked with before. "Need your help. Four flood lights dead. Event Saturday. Can you get replacements by tomorrow?"
I coordinate rush orders for a regional lighting distributor. In the last six years, I've processed 200+ emergency calls like this—same-day turnarounds, late-night driver swaps, "we'll pay anything" freight invoices. But this one stuck with me because it wasn't a supply failure. It was a spec failure.
It Started With a $220 Mistake
The original order was for a corporate launch event outside Houston. The spec called for a Feit Electric security flood light model rated for 700mA constant current. But the production manager had looked at the quote and decided to swap the Feit fixtures for a cheaper import brand. Same claimed wattage. Similar "5000K daylight" label. About $55 cheaper per light.

What Is a Constant Current LED Driver?
When I asked the production manager what drivers the cheap lights used, he sent a photo of the label. It said "constant current 700mA." That answered the core question: what is a constant current LED driver, and why does it matter?
Here's the short version. A constant current LED driver holds the current at a fixed level—say, 700 milliamps—while the voltage floats to whatever the LED array needs. That's the right way to power most high-power LEDs because LEDs are current-driven devices. If the current wanders, brightness wanders. If it spikes, you get flicker, then heat, then failure.
A constant voltage driver, by contrast, holds voltage steady and lets current vary based on what the load draws. Those are common in LED strip lighting and some signage, but using one on a constant-current flood light is asking for trouble.
The cheap fixture's label said constant current, but the actual current waveform from the driver was unstable. It wasn't a constant current driver doing its job. It was a poorly designed approximation that cooked the LEDs. Replacing all four with proper Feit Electric LED lights and a properly matched constant current driver was the fix.
The 36-Hour Fix
We had Feit Electric LED lights in stock for most of our jobs. The challenge wasn't finding them; it was configuration and time.
The client needed:
- Four replacement Feit Electric security flood lights with 700mA constant current drivers
- Two spotlight stand units for the walkway, because the rental stands they ordered were backordered
- A quick solution for the spotlight casting a clean beam across the stage entrance without a color mismatch
We had the flood lights in our warehouse. The stand units we could pull from another stock location. But the spotlight casting part took longer—because when the cheap lights were swapped, the beam angle changed from 120 degrees to 60 degrees. That altered the whole coverage pattern. We had to find fixtures with the right optic, not just the right wattage.
At 2:00 AM Friday, I loaded the Feit Electric units into my truck. We delivered the flood lights by 9:00 AM. A tech from the contractor met us at the venue and swapped the bad fixtures. Not ideal, but workable. The client's alternative was a $50,000 penalty clause in their venue contract and a very unhappy sponsor.
The Real Cost of Saving $220
Let's count what the "$220 savings" actually cost:
- Four replacement Feit Electric security flood lights at their normal listed price: $680
- Expedited freight from our local stock: $95
- One technician's time for after-hours testing: $240
- My own time on the phone, to be honest: hard to bill, but real
Total: over $1,000 on top of the original lights. The cheap fixtures were still in a dumpster.
Look, I'm not saying Feit fixtures are always the cheapest upfront. And I do not claim they're indestructible—no fixture is. But I've seen too many projects where the lowest quote turns into the most expensive invoice. The numbers above were accurate as of Q1 2025. LED pricing changes, especially with supply chain swings, so verify current rates before you budget.
Also, a note on claims: if you're going to buy or market on "energy efficient" promises, per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), environmental claims need substantiation. We gave the client the actual wattage and lumens from the spec sheet rather than vague "green" language. That's the safer path, and it's more useful.
What I'd Do Differently
First, I would have asked about the driver before the client ordered, not after. When a spec calls for a specific fixture, there's usually a reason. The driver matching is part of that reason. Do not assume "same specs" across brands means the same electrical behavior.
Second, I would have photographed the old driver label before ordering. We wasted 45 minutes matching the connector type because the client's photo was blurry. A small thing, but in a 36-hour window, 45 minutes is a lot.
Third, I'd remind every production buyer: test the lights when they arrive, not at rehearsal. Twenty minutes of setup testing would have caught the problem two days earlier.
I have mixed feelings about rush service premiums. On one hand, they hurt. On the other hand, rush capability is what saved this event. If the client had used the specified Feit Electric fixtures from the start, they'd have paid less and slept more. But they didn't, and we were ready.
