Before the First Order: Know What You're Actually Buying
Most mistakes happen because two things look similar but are not the same. Here's the list I wish someone had given me in 2018.
Step 1: Confirm the location rating before you pick the fixture
Want a chandelier over the bathtub? It can look incredible. But the code question comes first: Is the fixture rated for damp or wet locations?
In my first year, I had to redo a bathroom lighting plan because the chandelier we picked was dry rated. It wasn't the bulb's fault. The fixture couldn't handle moisture. That redo cost about $1,900 and involved a phone call from the inspector that I'd rather forget.
Check three things before you get attached to a design:
- The fixture listing is UL listed or ETL listed for the location type
- The label says damp location or wet location—there's a difference
- Your local electrical code and inspector accept that listing for the tub zone
Don't assume a glass shade makes it fine. For a bathtub chandelier, the location rating matters more than the finish. Most local codes follow the NEC and require a fixture in a tub or shower zone to be listed for damp or wet conditions.
Step 2: Choose the right Feit Electric LED tubes—Type A and Type B are not equals
If you're replacing fluorescent tubes, you'll see plug and play a lot. That phrase means compatible with the existing ballast only if you got the right tube. Feit Electric LED tubes come in different configurations. The two you need to know are Type A, which runs with the existing ballast, and Type B, which requires ballast bypass.
I once ordered 120 Feit Electric LED tubes for an office. Correction: I ordered them after assuming plug and play meant works with whatever is in the ceiling. It did not. The fixtures used a ballast that didn't match the tube model. $1,100 in extra labor and a one-week delay because I didn't check the ballast spec.
Checklist for LED tubes:
- What ballast is in the fixture? Take a photo before the old tube dies.
- Is the LED tube model listed as Type A, Type B, or dual-voltage?
- Does the tube require same-end or opposite-end wiring?
If you're not comfortable with line-voltage bypass work, get an electrician. This is not a bulb swap.
Step 3: For a Feit Electric LED grow light, measure light output, not wattage
The Feit Electric LED grow light I used for seed starting is honest equipment for leafy greens and herbs. But I thought equivalent wattage meant it could replace my old high-wattage setup for flowering plants. It couldn't. That was my assumption failure.
For plants, the useful numbers are PPF, or PPFD at a set distance, and DLI. The old incandescent-equivalent figure does not tell you how much usable photon energy lands on the canopy.
Here's a practical approach:
- For seedlings and leafy greens, a basic LED grow light at 12 to 18 inches is usually enough.
- For tomatoes or peppers in flower or fruit, either get a fixture with published PPF data or plan to use multiple units.
- Measure or check the manufacturer's recommended hanging height. If that information is missing, be skeptical.
If you're growing a handful of herbs, this is a low-stress buy. If you're planning a serious indoor harvest, calculate the PPFD map before ordering. I do not recommend skipping that step.
Step 4: Replacing a halogen spotlight: preserve the beam angle and color rendering
Halogen spotlights are still loved for their crisp, warm light. When you replace a halogen spotlight with LED, brighter is not automatically better.
A 50W halogen spotlight often produces roughly 500 to 700 lumens. But those lumens are concentrated in a narrow beam. If you choose a wide 120-degree LED, the same lumens will wash out instead of spotlighting the object. That's why beam angle is a spec to check before the old fixture comes down.
Also look at CRI. Halogen has excellent color rendering. If you jump to an LED spotlight with CRI 80, colors in the room can look flat. For art, retail, or anything color-critical, choose CRI 90 or higher. ENERGY STAR's Lighting Facts label is a useful shortcut because it lists lumens, wattage, and CRI on one document.
Before removing your old halogen spotlight:
- Check the current beam angle, usually stamped on the bulb or trim
- Write down the color temperature you like; halogen is typically around 3000K
- Check dimmer compatibility if the fixture is on a dimmer switch
Oh, and the same wattage rule? Don't. Compare lumens, beam angle, and CRI instead. And if the manufacturer publishes IES LM-80 data for an LED replacement, that tells you how the light output holds up over time. If they don't, you're guessing.
Step 5: Smart light only as much as your network can handle
Feit Electric's WiFi and Zigbee line is popular because it's broad. But smart fails when people skip the networking details.
Before you buy a WiFi smart light:
- Does it need a 2.4GHz network? Most do, and if your phone is on 5GHz, setup gets confusing.
- Does the product use WiFi directly or Zigbee? Zigbee needs a hub or compatible speaker. WiFi doesn't.
- Does the app require an account? That's normal, but if you're buying for a client, someone has to own that account.
I should add that where to stream Spotlight is a different search. If you meant the 2015 film, this article won't help. If you meant a security spotlight with streaming video, that's not a lighting purchase; it's a camera purchase. You need to check resolution, storage, cloud fees, night vision, and how it fits into the rest of the security system. A smart bulb does not replace a security camera.
Step 6: Run the final pre-order check
Now we get to the part most people skip: reading the spec sheet. Not the product page—the actual PDF or line sheet.
That one check has caught 47 potential errors on our team's orders in the past 18 months. You don't need a giant purchasing department. You need ten minutes.
Final checklist:
- Base or fixture type: E26, GU10, T8 single-end, and so on
- Input voltage and frequency
- Color temperature, lumens, CRI, and beam angle
- Dimmable? If yes, which dimmer does the manufacturer list?
- Location rating: dry, damp, or wet
- UL or ETL listing
- IP rating if you're near coastal or high-moisture conditions
- Published warranty terms and whether you need the original receipt
- Physical dimensions. I once picked a retrofit kit that was two inches too deep for the housing.
When This Checklist Is Not Enough
I recommend Feit Electric for many standard residential and light-commercial projects. The product range is wide, and the smart lineup covers WiFi and Zigbee without forcing a multi-vendor setup. But if you're working with salt air, explosion-proof spaces, or a custom fixture that needs a certified electrical engineer, this checklist is only a starting point.
The same logic applies to a bathtub chandelier. If your local inspector wants a specific wet-rating note on the drawings, get that before you fall in love with a fixture. The fixture can be the right one and still not be right for the room.
