First, There's No Single Answer

I review roughly 200 lighting SKUs a year before they reach customers. And the most common mistake I see isn't defective products—it's people buying the wrong category of product for their situation.

A contractor furnishing a hotel lobby has completely different needs from a home grower with six tomato plants in a tent. Yet both might search "Feit Electric" and land on the same product page. That's a problem.

So instead of one generic recommendation, here are the three scenarios I see most often. Find yours.

Scenario A: You Need Smart Controls

If you're here because you want to change the WiFi network on your Feit Electric smart bulbs, you're in this group. This is the most common support question we get, and most of the confusion comes from one thing: the 2.4GHz band.

That's it. But here's the part that causes 80% of failed attempts:

Most smart bulbs only support 2.4GHz WiFi. If your router broadcasts a combined SSID (2.4GHz and 5GHz under the same network name), the pairing can fail silently. You'll enter the right password and still get a timeout error.

Fix: log into your router settings and create a separate 2.4GHz network. Connect the bulb to that. It's annoying, I know. But it solves the problem almost every time.

The "smart bulbs need a hub" thinking comes from an era when Zigbee and Z-Wave required a dedicated bridge device. That's changed. Most WiFi models today connect directly to your router—no hub needed. If you're already running a Zigbee mesh, though, that's a different conversation.

Scenario B: You're Growing Plants Indoors

This is where Feit Electric full spectrum grow lights come in. And this scenario has the most misinformation floating around.

How long should a plant be under a grow light?

The honest answer: it depends on the plant and the growth stage. But here's the range that covers most indoor growing situations:

  • Seedlings: 14–16 hours on, 8–10 hours off

The question everyone asks is "can I just leave it on 24/7?" The question they should ask is "what happens during the dark period?"

Plants need darkness. Not just for rest—darkness triggers specific hormonal responses that affect flowering and fruiting. Running a grow light 24/7 can actually stress plants and reduce yields. I've seen this happen with first-time growers who think more light equals more growth.

In my first year reviewing grow products, I made the classic specification error: assumed "full spectrum" meant the same thing across every vendor. It doesn't. Some brands use that term loosely. When we audited our own labeling in Q1 2024, we found that a few SKUs were claiming broader coverage than the actual diode output supported. We corrected the packaging. Scenario C: You're Choosing a Decorative Fixture

This is the trickiest category because it's subjective. Two main styles come up constantly: cartoon chandeliers and spotlight chandeliers. They serve completely different purposes.

Cartoon chandelier: for themed spaces

These work in kids' rooms, playrooms, pediatric clinics, themed restaurants—anywhere the fixture is part of the décor story. The quality issues here are mostly about color consistency and safety. Cheap cartoon chandeliers often have uneven paint, sharp edges, or bulbs that aren't properly enclosed. If you're specifying for a commercial space, check that the fixture meets the relevant safety listing (UL, ETL, etc.).

One thing most buyers miss: replacement bulbs. If the chandelier uses a proprietary bulb shape, you're locked into that supplier. Ask before you buy.

Spotlight chandelier: for drama and focus

A spotlight chandelier is about directing attention. Dining rooms, hotel lobbies, high-ceiling living rooms. The quality metrics here are different:

  • Color temperature consistency: All heads should match. If one runs 2700K and another runs 3000K, you'll see it immediately.
  • Beam angle control: Good fixtures let you adjust each spot independently. Cheap ones either don't adjust or drift after a few weeks.
  • CRI (Color Rendering Index): For spaces where food or merchandise is displayed, you want CRI 90+. Below that, colors look flat.

Per FTC advertising guidelines (ftc.gov), lighting claims—lumen output, CRI, lifespan hours—must be truthful and substantiated. That's not a small thing. When a fixture claims 25,000 hours, someone had to actually test for that. If a spec sheet only gives you "long life" with no number, that's not a spec. That's marketing.

Which Scenario Are You In?

Here's the quick version:

  • You need remote control, scheduling, or voice assistant integration: Scenario A. Start with the WiFi setup, and make sure your router has a 2.4GHz band.
  • You're growing anything indoors—herbs, vegetables, houseplants: Scenario B. Match the light schedule to the growth stage, and don't skip the dark period.
  • You're buying a fixture that people will look at: Scenario C. Decide between themed (cartoon) and dramatic (spotlight) based on the space, then check CRI and color consistency.

If you're still on the fence, think about the failure mode that would hurt most. For a smart light, it's connection drops. For a grow light, it's missing a growth window. For a decorative fixture, it's looking wrong in the space.

That last one—the timing issue—is where I've seen the most regret. Not because the product was bad, but because it arrived late. In March 2024, we paid $400 extra for rush delivery on a fixture order. The alternative was missing a $15,000 installation deadline. That $400 bought certainty, not speed. And certainty was the whole point.
