Some purchasing decisions don't need a committee. Flood vs spot light bulbs deserves one. I manage buying for a 180-person company across two locations—about 60-80 orders a year and roughly $120k in vendor spend. Lighting is the category I used to underestimate, and it cost me.

If you're drawing a lighting plan and looking for a spotlight SVG to label fixtures, the icon will show a cone of light, but it won't tell you the beam angle. The spec sheet will. That's the first thing I check now.
When I compared flood and spot side by side in the same fixture, I finally understood why beam angle is separate from brightness. A high-lumen spot can look dimmer than a lower-lumen flood if the light isn't going where you need it. The numbers only make sense in context.

Here's my rule: choose flood when you need to cover a space; choose spot when you need to point at something specific. Period.

Motion sensors change the flood vs spot question. If a sensor detects movement and turns on a light, the light needs to cover the detection zone. A narrow spotlight can create a strange result: motion detected, but only a small circle of visible area.

If you see a grow light review that talks about light intensity and photosynthetically active radiation, that's a signal it's a specialty tool, not a general replacement.
So if you're maintaining an office, keep your categories separate. The right bulb for a plant probably isn't the right bulb for a sign.

This is the dimension that surprises people. A flood can create glare if it's aimed at eye level. A spotlight can create too much contrast if the background is dark. Neither is better until you know mounting height and viewing angle.
Example: a Volt spotlight aimed up at a company flag looked sharp at night. The same spot aimed down at a walkway looked harsh and unpleasant. The beam angle didn't change. The goal did. If you ask me, placement is the overlooked factor in most lighting orders.
If you're considering a Volt spotlight for landscape lighting, the same rule applies. Match the beam to the object, not the wattage. Landscape voltage and transformer sizing are separate conversations, but beam angle is the core decision. And don't assume a wider beam is always safer; a wide beam aimed at a narrow tree can wash out the texture.
Total Cost and Buying Small
Flood vs spot pricing is usually close. Don't hold me to exact numbers, but the two types often sit within a couple of dollars for similar wattage and CRI. The real cost difference comes from how many bulbs you need and whether they actually do the job.
One flood can replace two or three spots in a small hallway. That matters when you're paying for bulbs, labor, and disposal. I also look for actual specs instead of marketing language. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), claims like energy efficient are supposed to be truthful and substantiated, but I still verify wattage, lumens, and beam angle before ordering.
Now the personal part. When I took over purchasing in 2020, I placed a small order—about $200 worth of bulbs—with a supplier that had the best quote. They made it clear the order was barely worth their time. A smaller supplier took the order seriously and asked follow-up questions. That supplier got the next order, and the one after that.
A different supplier once couldn't provide a proper invoice, and our finance team rejected the expense. I ended up covering the mismatch from the department budget. That's why I now verify invoicing capability before placing any order, no matter how small.
In our 2024 vendor consolidation project, I grouped lighting orders across both locations. The small supplier became one of our core vendors. Today's $200 order was next year's $20,000 account. Don't let a supplier make you feel like a nuisance for wanting to test before scaling. Small doesn't mean unimportant. It means cautious, which is exactly how a buyer should be.

- Choose flood for hallways, loading docks, offices, parking areas, and any space where people move around. Coverage beats focus.
- Choose spot for signs, displays, artwork, accent walls, and landscape features where you want the eye to land on something specific.
- Choose a motion sensor flood for security coverage. A wide detection zone needs a wide beam.
- Choose a spot with a sensor only if the goal is to light a single door, sign, or camera blind spot.
If you're still torn, start with a small test order. Buy one flood and one spot, put them in the same fixture, and look for yourself. I do this before placing a larger order. (And yes, I keep the return labels.)
For our office, the Feit Electric motion sensor flood handles the dock. The lobby uses a spotlight for the sign. Both were right because they were chosen for context, not for a generic best bulb list.
That's it. The best bulb is the one that matches the space. Everything else is marketing.
