You bought a 4-ft LED grow light with hundreds of five-star reviews. Three weeks later, your seedlings look pale and stretched, and you can't figure out what went wrong. You reread the reviews—everyone else loves it. So what's the problem?
Probably nothing that's wrong with you. The light just doesn't fit your setup.

The Kelvin ratings on boxes—2700K, 3000K, 4000K, 5000K—are defined in ANSI C78.377, the chromaticity standard for solid-state lighting. Those categories map to real outcomes:
- 2700K–3000K (soft white): warm, inviting. Right for patios, restaurant seating, and residential outdoor living areas.
- 3500K–4000K (neutral white): middle ground for retail, covered walkways, and general commercial spaces.
- 5000K–6500K (cool white/daylight): visibility and camera clarity. The right call for security lighting, driveways, loading docks, garages.
Last year a contractor installed warm-white floodlights around a commercial property because the owner liked the cozy feel. The actual requirement was security. Every camera on site got amber-tinted footage, and identifying a person at 30 feet was basically impossible. Replacing 180 fixtures—labor and disposal included—came to about $22,000, though I might be misremembering the disposal line item.
Those floodlights had decent reviews. Probably "nice and warm." Nobody lied. But nobody checked the spec against the application either.
CRI Is the Difference Between "Looks Good" and "Looks Right"
