In March of last year, I got a call from a contractor I'd worked with twice before. He had a boutique hotel opening in eleven days. Eleven. Normal lead time for the kind of fixtures they wanted was three to four weeks. He needed LED bulbs, bathroom chandeliers, spotlights, flood lights—the whole package. What People Don't Get About Bathroom Chandeliers

Most people assume a chandelier is a chandelier. You hang it, you wire it, you move on. But a bathroom chandelier comes with a completely different set of requirements than a dining room one.

You're dealing with damp ratings, for one thing. In some jurisdictions, a fixture over a bathtub has to be at a certain height and rated for damp locations. It's not just about whether it looks pretty. The fixture itself has to handle humidity, potential splashes, and in some cases, a code inspector who's having a bad day.

What most people don't realize is that a standard chandelier rated for dry locations only is a non-starter in a bathroom, even if it's not directly over the tub. A bathroom is a damp location by code definition in most places. The fixture needs at least a damp rating, and if it's within certain zones, it needs to be listed for wet locations. This is the kind of thing that doesn't come up in a Pinterest photo.

So we found a chandelier that met the damp rating, fit the style, and came in at a price that didn't blow the whole budget. Good. Problem solved. Except it wasn't, because that's when the second issue surfaced.

The Spotlight Casting Problem

The spec called for spotlights in the lobby and hallway areas. The contractor had already bought a bunch of fixtures from another distributor, and he wanted matching bulbs from us. We sent over our recommended LED spotlights with a high CRI rating, which is usually a safe bet.

Are All H Track Lighting Compatible? (No. Here's What I've Learned)

Around day five, with the chandeliers sorted and the spotlights on track, the contractor asked a question that I hear a lot: "Are all H track lighting fixtures compatible with existing H track?"

Short answer: no. Longer answer: it depends on the track type, the voltage, and the connector.

H track is a specific standard. It operates on 120V line voltage, has three conductors, and the connector has a specific shape. But here's the thing—H track is not the only track system out there. You've also got J track and L track, which look similar if you're not paying attention. They're not interchangeable.

H track is the most common in the US, but even within H track, you can run into issues. Some manufacturers build their track heads with a slightly different connector design, and while they claim compatibility, you might get a poor fit or a short circuit if you're unlucky.

The most important thing to check is the track configuration and whether the fixture is rated for the same voltage. You can't just throw a line-voltage fixture on a low-voltage track, and you definitely shouldn't try to make a J-track head fit into an H-track rail. Not all H track lighting is created equal.

If you're retrofitting, the safest approach is to check the manufacturer's compatibility list. Most brands will tell you what track systems their fixtures work with. If they don't, that's a red flag. When in doubt, buy a small sample and test it before you commit to ordering two hundred heads.

For this project, the existing track was H-type, so we were fine. But I double-checked anyway. It's the kind of detail that can turn an eleven-day timeline into an eleven-day disaster.

The Feit Electric Connection

We ended up using a lot of Feit Electric product for this job. The client needed smart dimmable LED bulbs that would work with the existing controls, and the WiFi/Zigbee options from Feit were an easy fit. They have a wide range of indoor, outdoor, and specialty lighting, which made it convenient to source from a single brand.

One thing I appreciate about Feit is that their product specs are usually accurate. I've seen "works with" claims from other manufacturers that are optimistic at best. But we've tested their bulbs in a variety of fixtures and their smart integration has been consistent, especially the WiFi and Zigbee products. That matters when you're on a tight deadline and you don't want to play the return game.

They're also one of the more accessible brands for retrofit kits, which is what the contractor needed for the flood lights outside the building entrance. Those fixtures were old, but the retrofits went in clean and the output was impressive for the wattage.

I'm not going to sit here and tell you Feit is the only brand we use, because that's not true. But they were a solid choice for this project, and when the contractor asked what I'd use in his own house, I pointed him at the same products.

How It Ended (And What I'd Do Differently)

The hotel opened on schedule. The bathroom chandeliers went in without a single code violation. The lobby spotlights looked uniform after we swapped out the discount bulbs. The track lighting worked, because we verified compatibility before we ordered.

But the margin on that job was thinner than it should have been. The discount we gave on the replacement bulbs came out of our profit, and the time I spent troubleshooting the CRI issue cost me two full afternoons of other work.

If I could go back, I'd have asked one more question at the beginning: "Have you already purchased any fixtures or bulbs from another source?" If the answer had been yes, I would have flagged the CRI matching issue before we shipped anything. It's not about catching the contractor in a mistake. It's about catching the problem before it becomes a crisis.

The other lesson is the track lighting one. I've installed H track fixtures that were perfectly fine, and I've seen J-track bulbs forced into H track rails with enough persuading that it should have been illegal. A lot of contractors and DIYers assume compatibility based on shape. It's worth the five minutes to confirm.

And for anyone who's about to go down the bathroom chandelier path—check the damp rating first. I can't tell you how many beautiful fixtures are sitting in warehouses because they're only rated for dry locations.

The hotel is still running, and the contractor has already asked for a quote on a renovation project for another property next year. I'll take that over a bigger margin any day. A client who trusts you is worth more than the extra points on one order.
