I've been handling lighting orders for residential and light-commercial projects since 2018. In that time, I've personally made—and documented—six significant specification mistakes, totaling roughly $4,800 in wasted budget. Now I maintain our team's checklist so you don't repeat my errors.
This is for contractors, electricians, and small distributors who specify LED lighting on the go. If you're a homeowner doing a single bathroom renovation, most of this still applies, but your risk tolerance is different. I'll flag where that matters.
Here's the thing: most LED lighting mistakes aren't because a product was bad. They're because someone spec'd the wrong product for the application. The difference doesn't always show up on the purchase order—it shows up in rework, delays, and callbacks. This isn't a theory. I've paid for that education.
Seven steps, in the order I'd run them.
Step 1: Identify the exact application before looking at any product
Go to the site. Or at least get photos. This sounds obvious, but in 2021 I ordered 40 retrofit kits for a commercial corridor without confirming whether the existing cans were 4-inch or 6-inch. They were 4-inch. I ordered 6-inch. That was $680 in restocking fees plus a 2-week delay. The project's timeline had zero slack.
Run through this before pricing anything:
- Indoor or outdoor?
- Existing fixture type, dimensions, and housing condition
- Mounting location (ceiling, wall, recessed, track)
- Voltage and wiring configuration available
- Expected daily runtime
For a bathroom spotlight, the moisture rating is non-negotiable. Bathroom zones have specific IP requirements, especially near the shower or tub. A decorative fixture with no IP rating might look great in a showroom, but it won't survive zone 1 or 2 conditions. Check the zone, then spec accordingly.
Step 2: Talk lumens, not wattage
Everyone asks for wattage. The right question is lumens.

That's a serious piece of gear—it delivers roughly the output of a 1000W incandescent or halogen work light while drawing 300W actual power. But if a customer says "I need a 300-watt bulb" and you hand them a standard household 300W-equivalent A19, they're going to be profoundly disappointed when it barely lights their workshop corner.
An incandescent spotlight comparison makes this concrete. A 50W halogen spotlight typically produces 400–500 lumens. A 10–12W LED spot matches that or exceeds it. This is the step people skip. I know why—it doesn't seem urgent at the ordering desk.
I lost $2,100 on a high-end retail fit-out in 2022 because I spec'd 4000K general lighting for a space that needed 2700–3000K to match the client's brand atmosphere. The interior designer rejected the entire lighting plan. Every unit was already installed. The replacements came out of my margin.
CRI matters more than most customers realize. Anything below 80 CRI makes colors look flat or distorted. For retail, galleries, and hospitality, you want 90+. Feit Electric publishes CRI ratings on their spec sheets—check before you commit. And for a bathroom spotlight, color temperature is a real decision: 2700–3000K gives a warm, residential feel; 4000K suits commercial grooming areas. Ask the customer which they want. Don't assume.
Step 4: Verify smart lighting compatibility before installation
If the project calls for smart lighting, you're now in ecosystem territory. WiFi and Zigbee are the two main paths. Feit Electric builds both, which is part of why I've used their products—but the question is whether the customer's existing home automation or building control system speaks the same protocol.
Here's a mistake I made in March 2023: I installed Zigbee smart fixtures at a client's office without confirming their building controller was Zigbee-based. It was a proprietary wireless system. The client had to replace the controllers—or lose the smart features entirely. We replaced the controllers. That conversation is not one you want to have with a client who trusted your recommendation.

Step 5: Decide retrofit vs. full replacement on total cost, not sticker price

But sometimes a full replacement is the lower-cost path over time:
- Housing shows signs of rust, corrosion, or water damage
- The existing fixture isn't compatible with available retrofit kits
- The lighting layout is changing anyway
Example from 2022: a client wanted to retrofit outdoor flood lights around their loading dock. The housings were 15 years old. Two had cracked seals and water ingress. We showed the client the inside of those fixtures—rust, dead insects, degraded gaskets. Retrofit kits would have failed within a year. A full replacement with IP66-rated fixtures cost more upfront, but the total cost over five years was lower than retrofitting twice.
The customer was unhappy about the price difference until I walked them through the math. Then they approved it without further questions.
Step 6: Match outdoor flood lights to the environment
“What is the best led outdoor flood light?” is the most common question I get. The honest answer: it depends on the environment. Not on brand loyalty.
Run through these ratings and conditions:
- IP rating: IP65 minimum for outdoor. IP66 or higher for heavy rain, washdown areas, or coastal installation.
- Operating temperature range: Enclosed fixtures trap heat. Verify the LED driver is rated for the ambient temperature of the installation site.
- Corrosion resistance: Coastal salt air kills standard aluminum housings faster than any electrical failure will.
- Sensor needs: Photocell, motion, or dusk-to-dawn? Decide before you order, not after.
The best flood light for a residential driveway in Phoenix is not the best one for a fish processing facility in Seattle. The quality of the product might be identical—but the specification requirements are not.
Step 7: Calculate total cost, not sticker price
From my first year in this business (2018), this is the lesson that has saved us the most money:
Total cost = product price + shipping + installation labor + energy use over lifetime + replacement and rework risk.
A $500 quote that becomes $800 after freight, mounting hardware, and a revision cycle isn't the cheapest option. The $650 all-inclusive quote often wins.
I watched a customer buy competitively priced outdoor flood lights for a parking lot. They saved $360 on the fixtures. Three of the six units failed within 14 months. Replacement labor alone ran $420—which already exceeded the savings. And that customer now tells everyone to “buy once, buy right.”
Common Mistakes (Take These Seriously)
Field notes from projects that went sideways:
Wattage confusion. A feit electric 300 watt led bulb is not a drop-in replacement for every 300W-rated fixture. Confirm base type, physical dimensions, housing compatibility, and whether the existing ballast needs to be bypassed. Get this wrong and you're looking at a call-back plus the cost of the product.

Retrofit isn't automatically cheaper. Retrofit kits carry hidden costs: labor, compatibility testing, disposal of old components. Price both the retrofit path and the full replacement path before promising the customer a savings figure.
Check the rated lifetime. 25,000 hours is common for LED. But budget units are sometimes rated 15,000. The difference shows up a few years down the road as a customer complaint: “You said LEDs last forever.” No, I said quality LEDs last a long time. There's a difference.

My experience is based on roughly 300 residential and light-commercial projects over six years. If you're doing industrial-scale lighting—warehouses, stadiums, municipal streets—your requirements are different and your margin for error is thinner. This checklist is a starting point, not a substitute for engineering review.
I have mixed feelings about how many of these lessons I had to learn the hard way. On one hand, the mistakes taught me more than any training manual. On the other, they cost real money and a couple of client relationships. The checklist has caught 47 potential errors in the past 18 months.
