It was August 2023. I'd just signed off on a $3,200 order of LED grow lights for a retail client's indoor herb display. Everything looked good on paper — the specs matched the quote, the price was competitive, and the vendor (a well-known brand I won't name) had great reviews.
Two weeks later, the shipment arrived. We unboxed 48 units, installed them, and waited. Three days in, the herbs started bleaching. By day five, half the plants were stressed. That's when I learned something that everything I'd read about grow lights had skipped:

Mistake #1: The 'Review' Trap (Grow Lights)

- Read reviews for your exact scale — skip the single-bulb reviews if you're ordering 50+.
- Test emergency bulb function in the actual fixture and switch setup before installing 100 of them.
- Get a sample — always. Visual approval is not enough.
- Specify CRI and color temperature tolerance (Delta E ≤ 2 for brand-critical colors per Pantone guidelines).
- Confirm dimming compatibility (leading edge vs trailing edge, minimum load).
- Check IP rating if outdoor — even "indoor/outdoor" bulbs may fail in direct rain.
- Calculate total cost of ownership — including potential rewiring, replacement bulbs, and energy savings.
- Have a backup plan — know your return policy before you order, especially for specialty items like grow lights and chandeliers.
5 minutes of verification beats 5 days of correction. I've got the receipts to prove it.
