I'm the person who signs the lighting purchase orders, not the person on the sales floor. For the last six years, I've managed a lighting and electrical accessory budget of about $180,000 a year, negotiated with dozens of vendors, and documented every order in our cost tracking sheet. 1. How should I compare FEIT Electric 15 watt bulbs?

The first mistake is comparing wattage only. A FEIT Electric 15 watt bulb uses 15 watts, but wattage tells you the energy draw, not the brightness. The useful number is lumens. For example, a 15W LED that produces 1,500 lumens is delivering about 100 lumens per watt. Another 15W LED producing 1,050 lumens is only delivering 70 lumens per watt. Same wattage, noticeably different light.

People sometimes assume lower wattage means weaker light. That's not how LED works. Lower wattage can mean lower electricity use with the same useful light. What I care about is how many fixtures or lamps I need to hit the target light level.

A lamp that consumes less energy but fails early is not a saving. I track replacement cost over time, not just the price per box. If I'm choosing between a 15W model with published performance data and a 15W model with no spec sheet, I don't see them as equal just because both draw 15W.

Before ordering 500 of anything, I also check the base type, bulb shape, color temperature, CRI rating, dimming compatibility, and whether the lamp is rated for enclosed fixtures. If LM-80/TM-21 data is available, I look at that too. It is a better tool for estimating long-term cost than the wattage number printed on a box.

2. Where do I find FEIT Electric grow light instructions if I lost the paper copy?

Don't search for a generic schedule. Find the model number printed on the fixture label first. Then search for that model on the FEIT Electric support section, not just a product family name. Most instruction sheets are posted on the product page as a PDF. If you can't find it, contact the vendor before you run the light.

I'm not a horticulturist, so I won't pretend to know the ideal distance from canopy or timer cycle for your plants. From a purchasing perspective, the manual matters because the wrong assumptions are expensive: wrong timer settings, wrong hanging height, or an abused driver can all lead to a return or a crop problem.

A proper instruction sheet should cover hanging height, distance, driver placement, and timer notes. If the sheet doesn't, ask for clarification. If the paper copy is missing, save the digital PDF in your records before installation. That small step saves a lot of phone calls.

3. Is a moon chandelier a maintenance problem?

A moon chandelier can be worth the cost in a lobby or dining room, but I price it as more than a decorative fixture. The installation and service plan are part of the total cost.

Before I approve a moon chandelier spec, I ask three questions:

  • Does it have standard replaceable bulbs or an integrated LED module?
  • Can you get replacement glass globes, and what is the lead time?
  • How much labor is involved if one lamp fails?

The fixture price can be reasonable and still cost a lot in year two if a globe breaks or an integrated module is difficult to service. For an integrated LED fixture, ask whether the LED module has its own part number and whether it can be replaced without disassembling the whole chandelier. If the answer is vague, that's a risk.

If a moon chandelier is going over a stairwell or a high ceiling, relamping access should be decided before the fixture is hung. A ladder might be fine; a lift rental changes the cost picture.

I'm not saying every decorative chandelier has to use replaceable bulbs. I'm saying the service path is part of the specification, and the vendor should be able to explain it.

4. What is the Luxor spotlight actually designed for?

The Luxor spotlight is for accent and display lighting, not for washing an entire wall. It is a directional fixture with a controlled beam. In the orders I've handled, it worked well in retail displays and similar spots where the goal is to draw attention to a specific object or area.

That said, I can't quote one beam angle for every Luxor spotlight, because the series includes different versions. The product number is the specification. Ask for a cut sheet and check the photometric data: beam angle, color temperature, CRI, and mounting requirements. The word spotlight alone does not settle it. Some spotlights are narrow, some are wider; if you need even light across a large wall, use something designed for wall washing.

Our sample is mostly commercial and display applications, so high-end residential use may differ. If buying through a distributor, ask whether the quote includes the mounting accessory, driver, or transformer. That is often the missing line item.

5. 5V vs 12V LED strip: which one is the better buy?

The product that is cheaper per foot is not always cheaper per project. This is where I see the biggest gap between estimate and final invoice.

5V strip can make sense for short runs, under-cabinet lighting, or battery-powered displays. 12V strip is usually a more practical starting point for longer runs because voltage drop is easier to manage. I say usually because the real answer depends on the length of the continuous run, the copper thickness in the strip, and the current draw of the LEDs.

The question I ask before quoting is: what is the longest continuous run in the layout? A 5V strip can fade toward the end of a long run unless you add extra power injection points. Each injection point means cable, connectors, labor, and another place for something to fail. By the time I priced that out on a 30-foot retail shelf, the 'cheap' 5V strip came out well above a simpler 12V design. I still check voltage drop charts before ordering now.

If the run is very long, ask about 24V strip as well. I know the question says 5V vs 12V, but a complete system comparison should include all practical voltages.

6. How do I evaluate a FEIT Electric quote beyond the bottom line?

I've negotiated enough orders to know that a low line item can hide all kinds of other costs. I now ask what is not included before asking what the price is.

For a FEIT Electric order, the checklist I use looks like this:

  1. Are exact product numbers on the quote, or just generic descriptions?
  2. Are drivers, dimmers, connectors, mounting hardware, and freight broken out separately?
  3. Is this a stock item or a special order?
  4. What is the replacement process if the wrong product arrives or a carton is damaged?

I don't automatically pick the supplier with the lowest first number. I pick the quote that accounts for the whole project. A vendor can charge a little more upfront and still cost less in total if the answer to each question above is clear. The opposite is also true. The hidden fee only hurts when I didn't plan for it.

That's why I'd rather see a complete price with all the extras visible. The transparent option may look higher on day one. It usually wins by the time the invoice is paid.
